Tax Benefits

Family caregivers in North Dakota can receive the following tax benefits for their work as a family caregiver.

The Child and Dependent Tax Credit

The Child and Dependent Tax Credit (CDCTC) is a percentage of an individual's earned income. An individual may receive the credit if he or she is caring for one or more dependents and has earned income below a certain amount. The costs must be for caring for a child or other dependent so that the taxpayer can work or look for a job. If they are not, the taxpayer will not be eligible. Learn more here

North Dakota Family Member Care Tax Credit

This Tax Credit is a percentage of the taxpayer's earned income. The amount of credit is determined by eligible expenses incurred for caring for a family member. The caregiver can offset up to $4,000 in expenses with the credit, which is a percentage of income. Learn more about eligibility for the credit here

Medicaid Waivers in North Dakota

North Dakota has three Medicaid Waiver options for individuals who provide care to their loved ones at home.

Demonstration: Section 1115 Waiver

This demonstration project allows the State of North Dakota and providers to establish a managed care delivery system for home and community-based services.

The project aims to improve the quality of care, promote cost-effective delivery systems, and expand access to care by increasing the number of available Medicaid waivers for home-based services. Learn more here

Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS): Section 1915(c) Waiver.

This waiver provides an alternative to nursing homes and allows the State of North Dakota to offer home-based services as an alternative to institutional care. HCBS consists of home and community services delivered by a consumer's family or friends.

Freedom of Choice: Section 1915(b) Waiver

This waiver allows the State of North Dakota and providers to grant a state waiver from the requirements in the Medicaid Act.

These waivers aim to assist and promote the development of treatment alternatives, which provide therapeutic services and services involving supportive care, to promote freedom of choice for Medicaid enrollees.
