Summary of Statistics
The state of South Carolina offers a variety of programs and financial assistance to help family caregivers get paid for their services. It’s understandable if you don’t know where to start when it comes to getting paid as a family caregiver.
After all, there are many different programs and options available, and it can be confusing to try to figure out which one is right for you.
Fortunately, we’re here to help. At Aidaly, it’s our mission to connect South Carolina caregivers with the resources due to them. Here’s a quick overview of some of the programs and assistance available to help you get paid as a family caregiver in South Carolina.
South Carolina Tax Benefits
South Carolina offers a few different tax benefits that can help offset the costs of caregiving. The first is the Family Caregiver Tax Credit. The reimbursement is one hundred dollars per month for each caregiving month in which the caregiver cannot work because of their responsibilities, and $50 per month where working is still possible. Find out more here.
The person you’re caring for must be at least 75 years old and have a disability that prevents them from basic self-care. If you’re caring for more than one person, you can claim credit for each of them.
Medicaid and Other State Programs
South Carolina also offers Medicaid Waiver programs that can help with the costs of caregiving. These programs provide financial assistance to help pay for in-home care or other services that allow seniors to remain in their homes rather than go into a nursing home or other long-term care facility.
There are a few different waiver programs available, each with its own eligibility requirements.
The most common programs are the Community Choices Waiver, which is for seniors with disabilities, and the Home and Community Based Services Waiver, which is for seniors who are at risk of going into a nursing home. Learn more about each waiver here.
U.S. Veterans are entitled to extra benefits through the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). There are programs that may be available to help you if you are caring for a Veteran in South Carolina. Learn more about these benefits here.
The Veterans Aid and Attendance Program
The Veterans Aid and Attendance Program (VAA) provides an additional pension of up to $3,261 per month, separate from the normal VA pension. Qualifying Veterans can access these funds which allows them to pay for caregiving, including paying family members that provide care. Visit this website to learn more.
Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers
Family members that live with Veterans full time may be eligible for comprehensive assistance including monthly stipend payments. The program was recently extended to cover veterans from any period of service. Visit this website to find out more.
